University of Exeter stands as a prestigious public research institution which operates mainly from its campus in the ancient city of Exeter that sits within Devon in South West England. The university has achieved international recognition as a top research university because it belongs to the Russell Group, which includes the top research universities in the United Kingdom. The university has gained recognition for its beautiful campus spaces, which include the Streatham Campus that people consider to be one of the best-looking areas in the nation because of its beautiful parkland and botanical gardens and its modern architectural buildings which include the Forum. The university traces its origins to the 19th century when it started as several specialized educational institutions that were established to meet the cultural and technical requirements of the local area. The St Luke's College (1838) and the Exeter School of Art (1855) and the Exeter School of Science (1863) eventually merged to create the University College of the South West of England which opened its doors in 1922. The college operated as a University of London institution until Queen Elizabeth II granted it a Royal Charter in 1955. The university experienced its most rapid growth between 1970 and 2000 when it acquired the Camborne School of Mines in 1993 and opened the Penryn Campus in Cornwall in 2004 to establish itself as a major educational institution for the South West region.
