The institution traces its origins back to 1825 with the establishment of the Scientific and Mechanic Institute, which aimed to bring useful knowledge to the local trading and working classes. The Young Men's Mental Improvement Society started in 1841, but it evolved into a Technical School and Mechanics' Institute by 1884. The institution achieved university status in 1992 after it operated as a Technical College and Polytechnic from its founding in 1970. The institution transformed from a small local initiative with 40 students into a globally recognized academic center which has existed for nearly two centuries.
