University of Plymouth functions as a major public research institution which resides in the coastal town of Plymouth, England. The university achieved its official status in 1992 while its history began in 1862 when the Plymouth School of Navigation first opened its doors. The institution underwent multiple transformations throughout its history, starting as a polytechnic in 1970 and becoming "Polytechnic South West" in 1989 before reaching its present state. The university established itself as the first UK post-1992 institution to create a medical and dental school.

The university uses its Latin motto Indagate Fingite Invenite to guide its operations, which means "Explore Dream Discover" in English. The institution uses this motto as a quotation from Mark Twain to demonstrate its historical connection to Plymouth's seafaring tradition while showing its educational mission to create new solutions through student learning. The university has developed a global reputation for its marine and ocean engineering programs which enable it to lead in sustainability research and studies about "life below water."
