University of Sussex functions as a premier public research university which operates from its location in Falmer close to the bustling city of Brighton and Hove in England. The institution’s history is rooted in the "new wave" of British universities established after the Second World War to expand access to higher education. The University of Sussex became the first "plate glass" university after it received its Royal Charter on August 16 1961 although its establishment had been first proposed in 1911. The founders established the school through their vision which John Fulton served as the first Vice-Chancellor and Asa Briggs worked as a historian because they wanted to create interdisciplinary schools of study that would replace traditional departmental educational approaches. The architect Sir Basil Spence created the campus design which construction began in the 1960s and 70s and now stands as a recognized architectural masterpiece because multiple buildings including Falmer House have received Grade I and II protected status.
