University of the Republic

University of the Republic known in Spanish as Universidad de la República (UdelaR) stands as the biggest public research university in Uruguay. The university operates from Montevideo which serves as its main base because it functions as an independent educational institution which allows students and faculty members and alumni to take part in its leadership. The university functions as a fundamental institution for Uruguayan society because it pursues its mission of intellectual freedom and social responsibility and democratizing knowledge. The urban campus exists as an integral part of Montevideo while the university has grown its regional centers to provide educational resources throughout all areas of the nation.

The establishment of the university took many years to complete which began when Senator Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga introduced a law in 1833 to create multiple academic departments. The House of General Studies was established in 1836 which later developed into a national university. The Universidad Mayor de la República opened on July 18 1849 as a new educational institution which operated during a time when the nation built its fundamental structures. The university became the main center for social and political thought during the 20th century because the 1958 Organic Law gave the university permanent independence from government control. The university became a strong representation of democratic principles which operated as the main scientific research institution in Uruguay after it survived the challenges of the 1970s and 80s military dictatorship.
