Can Tho University

Can Tho University functions as a top public research university which serves as the main research and cultural center and scientific and technical center for the entire Mekong Delta region in Vietnam. The university serves as an essential development center for the region's economy because it exists within the region that produces most of Vietnam's rice through its practice of "Community, Totality, and Uniqueness." The university's main Campus II area represents one of the few extensive green areas that exist in the downtown area because it is being developed into a sustainable "park campus" which will demonstrate climate change adaptation methods through its water-sensitive design. The university operates as a top interdisciplinary research facility which specializes in agricultural and environmental science studies that match the ecological and industrial requirements of the delta environment.

The institution's history began on March 31, 1966, when it was founded as the Can Tho Institute with four initial faculties: Sciences, Law and Social Sciences, Letters, and Education. The institution functioned as an essential educational institution during its first period of operation because it provided education to South Vietnam despite its three educational facilities which operated from multiple locations. Can Tho University became the new name of the institute after Vietnam's 1975 unification, which initiated a period of rapid growth to fulfill the educational demands of the developing nation. The institution grew from a small regional school to a large multidisciplinary university which now includes multiple specialized colleges and research institutes while training thousands of professionals and conducting early Vietnam internet research and biotechnology studies.
