Vietnam National University, Hanoi

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU; Vietnamese: Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội, ĐHQGHN) is a public research university system in Hanoi, Vietnam. T

In 1906, the French colonial government established the University of Indochina in Hanoi. The university was initially intended to train Vietnamese students for positions in the colonial administration. However, it also attracted students from other parts of Indochina and from abroad.

The University of Indochina was closed during World War II, but it was reopened in 1945 after Vietnam gained independence. In 1946, the university was renamed Vietnam National University.

In the early years of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the university played an important role in training the country's first generation of leaders and professionals. The university also played a leading role in the development of Vietnamese culture and science.

During the Vietnam War, the university was forced to operate underground. However, it continued to teach and conduct research. After the end of the war in 1975, the university resumed normal operations.

In 1993, Vietnam National University was reorganized and renamed Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The university merged with several other leading universities in Hanoi, including Hanoi National University of Education and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages.

Today, VNU is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Vietnam. VNU is also a leader in international education and research collaboration.
