National School of Advanced Technologies, widely known by its French acronym ENSTA, is a premier French Grande École and a founding member of the prestigious Institut Polytechnique de Paris. Operating under the administrative supervision of the French Ministry of Armed Forces, the institution is a multidisciplinary engineering powerhouse with primary campuses in Paris-Saclay and Brest. It is recognized globally for its high-level scientific research and its strategic role in sectors such as defense, maritime engineering, sustainable energy, and digital transformation. The university holds the distinction of being the oldest Grande École in France, with a history dating back to 1741. It was originally established by Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau as the School of Royal Shipbuilding Engineers to provide naval constructors with a theoretical foundation in mathematics and physics. Over the centuries, the institution underwent several transformations, merging with other specialized schools for weaponry, explosives, and hydrography in 1970 to form the modern ENSTA. A major milestone in its recent history occurred in January 2025, when ENSTA Paris and ENSTA Bretagne officially merged to create a unified national entity, further strengthening its capacity for large-scale research and international collaboration.
