The importance of medical terminology

Lina Bennani · Oct 17, 2026

One small detail I appreciate about the programme is the inclusion of medical terminology. Learning the language used in healthcare seems like a useful foundation for the years of medical education ahead. I want to become familiar with the concepts and terminology I will encounter as I progress, so I find this part of the curriculum particularly relevant.

MD - My 1st year

Lenny Khan · Oct 10, 2026

i have so many things i want to do with my future and medicine has always been the main goal. i want to learn as much as possible and eventually get experience in a proper clinical environment. one of the reasons i was happy choosing NAU was seeing that the programme goes beyond the classroom and includes clinical training later on. im still at the beginning of everything but im excited to see where this takes me.

Learning to Think Like a Future Doctor

Isla Cooper · Oct 9, 2026

I remember finding it difficult at first to move beyond simply memorising information, but working through medical cases has helped me approach things differently. I now try to think about what I would actually do with the information I have and what other factors might be relevant. Hearing how my classmates interpret the same case is interesting too, because it often makes me consider things I had overlooked.

I am really happy with my experience at NAU and I am glad I chose the Premed programme three years ago

Tariq Bashir · Oct 9, 2026

I am really happy with my experience at NAU and I am glad I chose the Premed programme three years ago. Biology was the subject I enjoyed most from the beginning because it was something I already felt comfortable with. Some of the other subjects were more difficult for me and took a bit longer to understand. I had to learn to be patient with myself and spend more time going through the material instead of expecting everything to make sense straight away.

The study materials helped a lot because I could go back to topics whenever I needed and work through them at my own pace. I also appreciated having people I could turn to when I had questions or needed something explained differently. Those things made a real difference, especially during the periods when I found the workload challenging.

Now when I look back at how I was when I first started, I can see that I have improved in areas where I used to struggle. I feel more confident with the subjects and I have a better idea of how to approach difficult material. For me, that is one of the best things about my time at NAU. I have learned a lot academically and I have also become a more independent student. I would make the same choice again.

Preparing for the Next Stage

Hiba Saed · Oct 3, 2026

Second year feels like an important stage of the MD because the knowledge we are building will be used later in clinical training. I pay attention to the practical side for that reason. I want to leave each stage knowing that I can actually use what I have learned.

My First Year in Medical School

Nadia Karim · Oct 3, 2026

One thing I noticed very quickly after coming to NAU was how international the campus is. There are students from so many different countries, and I have really enjoyed hearing about where everyone comes from and what brought them to medicine. I was quite shy when I first arrived and honestly thought it might take me a while to make friends, especially because I was new and away from my family. People were very friendly from the beginning, though, and I have already met some lovely people through classes and everyday life on campus. I also like that everyone has different backgrounds and experiences, so there is always something new to talk about. It has made being away from home feel much more comfortable for me.

A Pre-Med Student's Experience

Murad Azvini · Sep 30, 2026

As I have progressed through the programme, I have particularly enjoyed the subjects that bring the scientific foundation closer to medicine. Introduction to anatomy, physiology, microbiology and medical terminology have been interesting because they provide a different perspective on information that initially appears very theoretical. I find myself thinking more about how systems function, how disease processes develop and how medical terminology is constructed. These subjects have made the connection between my current studies and my future medical training much more tangible.

really great experience

Deniz Arsan · Sep 23, 2026 (edited)

The transition from first year into second year has made me much more aware of the importance of developing effective independent study habits. NAU provides academic resources and faculty support, while students are also expected to take responsibility for keeping up with their work. I have found this combination useful because medical school requires a considerable amount of self-directed learning. When I encounter a particularly difficult subject, I can seek clarification from faculty while continuing to work independently outside scheduled teaching. Over time, this has helped me become more organised and more confident in identifying the areas where I need to spend additional time.
