Adelaide University

Adelaide University is a newly formed public research university located in South Australia. Its operations began officially in January 2026. Its formation was to create a "university for the future," making it a modern foundation of the Australian higher education system. Its footprint is multi-campus, including some of the most iconic sandstone sites. This institution is a global powerhouse, combining a commitment to excellence with a commitment to equity and community connectivity. It prides itself on being a high-performing member of the prestigious Group of Eight universities.

The institution’s formation is unique. It is the culmination of a historic merger between two of the most historic institutions of higher learning in South Australia. The University of Adelaide was formally founded in 1874. On the other hand, the University of South Australia was formally established in 1991. Though the idea of a merger between the two universities has been on the table over the years, the most significant talks were in 2012 and 2018. However, the actual merger was set off by the state-sponsored legislation of 2023. This union combines the colonial legacy of Australia’s third-oldest university with the progressive and industry-aligned ethos of the second. This union brings together over 150 years of accumulated academic legacy and achievement.

Today, the newly formed Adelaide University is a significant driver of the local economy. It is expected to contribute billions to the Australian economy. By bringing together the best of the two founding universities, it provides an environment where world-class research and teaching are available to a diverse Australian and international population. This newly formed institution is committed to being "agile, courageous, and deeply connected" as it commences its inaugural year in 2026.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Adelaide University is positioned as the #82 top university in the world, which makes it the #8 top university in Australia.
