Central Queensland University is recognised as Australia’s leading university for social equity and is a dual sector higher education and vocational institution. It has many locations, both in the major cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (approximately 20 to 25), and in several regional centres, with its main administrative office in Rockhampton, Queensland. CQUniversity Australia also holds the distinction of being Australia’s first and only Ashoka U Changemaker Campus, which demonstrates CQUniversity’s commitment to social innovation, community engagement and the delivery of practical, real-world educational pathways to a diverse range of domestic and international students.
CQUniversity’s history began in 1967, when it opened its doors as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia) to meet the demand for technical education in regional Queensland. Over the past few decades, CQUniversity has evolved through several major changes, beginning with the creation of the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education in 1971, and subsequently becoming a public university as the University of Central Queensland in 1992. The most recent milestone in the evolution of CQUniversity occurred in 2014, when CQUniversity merged with CQ TAFE to become the first dual-sector university in Queensland and to unite the more than 100 years combined expertise of the two institutions in the provision of both vocational and higher education.
