The name of the University comes from Prime Minister Curtin, a wartime leader with considerable influence over Australian history. Founded in 1900 as Perth Technical School, the established of a new identity occurred in 1966 when the Western Australian Institute of Technology was established. Since then, the size and rank of the Institute have experienced tremendous growth over the last 20 years; therefore, the Institute was renamed Curtin University of Technology in 1987 as the first technology university in Australia. In 2010, a name change to Curtin University would help convey the identity of this globally recognized institution.
