The institution was officially founded on December 30, 1971, when it received its current name to honor Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, who served as the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and co-authored the Australian Constitution. Teaching began in 1975 at the new Nathan campus which introduced interdisciplinary programs that studied environmental science and modern Asian studies as new fields of academic research. The university experienced major growth during the late 1980s and early 1990s through various college and institute mergers which included the Queensland Conservatorium and the Queensland College of Art. The university used this expansion to build different areas of expertise while developing its multiple campus system that served a wide range of students across an extensive geographical area.
