The institution traces its beginnings to 1908 when George and Ethel Swinburne established the Eastern Suburbs Technical College to deliver educational opportunities to the surrounding community. The institution received a new name in 1913 when it became Swinburne Technical College to commemorate its founders. The college spent the majority of the 20th century developing new academic programs which included chemistry and engineering and art. The college reached a significant milestone when the Parliament of Victoria declared it a university on July 1 1992. The university has expanded its operations since then by establishing its Sarawak campus in Malaysia during 2000 and achieving higher international rankings until it became one of the top young universities in the world.
