University of Canberra functions as a public research university that operates from its campus in Bruce, which represents a suburban area of the Australian capital city. The university establishes its identity as a part of the national capital through its dedication to civic responsibilities that support community development, technological progress, and environmental sustainability. The campus spans 296 acres of land which features a distinct bush landscape that combines native gardens with modern buildings and a permanent kangaroo population. The university serves as a major social and cultural center for the area because of its strategic position between Belconnen Town Centre and national cultural sites.
The institution began its existence in 1967 when the Commonwealth Government established it as the Canberra College of Advanced Education (CCAE). The institution started its part-time operations in 1968 and proceeded to begin full-time teaching activities in the following academic year. The College achieved university recognition on January 1 1990 when it gained university status to operate as the University of Canberra through Monash University's initial support. The university experienced extensive growth in its physical and structural development after the Australian Capital Territory government acquired oversight of the institution. The institution started as a small college which received its first foundation stone from Prime Minister John Gorton and developed into a contemporary university which maintains international recognition.
