University of Tasmania functions as a leading public research university which stands as the fourth oldest higher education institution in Australia. The university exists as the exclusive higher education institution in Tasmania while operating its main campuses from Hobart and Launceston and Burnie. The university uses its natural environment assets which include Southern Ocean and Antarctic proximity to establish itself as a top research institution for marine and environmental studies. The university promotes inventiveness together with problem-solving abilities through its Latin motto Ingeniis Patuit Campus which means "The field lies open to talent."
The university started its operations on January 1 1890 when the Tasmanian Parliament established it through an Act which used funds from canceled overseas scholarship programs. The institution began its operations with a small number of students and limited teaching staff who delivered classes from the previous Hobart High School building situated on the Domain. The institution executed essential changes throughout the 20th century which included its 1960s relocation to Sandy Bay campus and its early 1990s merger with Tasmanian State Institute of Technology. The university achieved multiple milestones which enabled it to establish educational programs throughout the entire island while growing its reputation as a "sandstone university" which only applies to Australia's most ancient and distinguished universities.
