The University of Graz, officially known as Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, is a distinguished public research university which operates in the city of Graz in Austria. The university functions as an essential part of Austrian academic life because it maintains its status as the second-oldest university in Austria while being the largest university in Styria. The campus features an urban design which combines historical buildings with modern research facilities. The institution achieves international recognition through its interdisciplinary research programs and sustainable development practices, which create an environment that attracts scholars from various backgrounds to solve contemporary global problems.
The university was founded on January 1, 1585, by Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria, initially under the management of the Jesuit Order with faculties dedicated to theology and philosophy. The university experienced its first major disruption after Emperor Joseph II closed the institution in 1782 because he wanted to establish state control over educational institutions, which resulted in transforming the university into a lyceum which trained civil servants. The university received full university status again in 1827 when Emperor Francis I reestablished it, which resulted in the institution receiving a double name that honored both its original founder and the restorer. The university gained global recognition as a scientific research institution during the 20th century when it achieved six Nobel Prize victories, but the university faced the dark chapter of 1938 when many of its most brilliant scholars were forced to leave after the "Anschluss" event.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Karl-Franzens-Universitaet Graz is positioned as the #668 top university in the world, which makes it the #7 top university in Austria.
