Medical University of Vienna

Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna) is one of the longest-established medical education and research facilities in Europe. With almost 8,000 students, it is currently the largest medical training center in German-speaking countries. With more than 6,000 employees, 30 departments, 2 clinical institutes, 13 medical theory centers, and numerous highly specialized laboratories, it is one of Europe's leading research establishments in the biomedical sector. MedUni Vienna also has a medical history museum, the Josephinum.

The Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna) dates back to 1365, when it was founded as a faculty of the University of Vienna. This makes it one of the oldest medical universities in Europe.

In the 18th century, MedUni Vienna gained international renown under the leadership of the Dutch physician Gerard van Swieten. Van Swieten was appointed by the Habsburg ruler Maria Theresia to reform the medical school. He introduced new teaching methods and established a number of important institutions, such as the General Hospital of Vienna and the Josephinum medical museum.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, MedUni Vienna continued to be a leading center of medical education and research. Many of the most important advances in medicine during this period were made by MedUni Vienna faculty and alumni.

In 2004, MedUni Vienna became an independent university. Today, it is one of the largest and most prestigious medical universities in the world.
