University of Graz

The University of Graz, also known as Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, is a public research university located in Graz, Austria. It is the largest and oldest university in Styria, as well as the second-largest and second-oldest university in Austria.

The University of Graz was founded in 1585 by Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria. The university was initially supported by the Jesuit order and its curriculum consisted of basic humanistic studies and further studies in philosophy and theology.

In the 18th century, the university underwent a number of reforms. In 1716, a state commission proposed the establishment of professorships in law, medicine, and history. This proposal was met with resistance from the Jesuit order, but it was eventually approved in 1776.

In 1782, the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV. This led to a number of changes at the University of Graz, including the appointment of secular professors and the introduction of new subjects to the curriculum.

In 1827, the university was re-instituted by Emperor Francis I and renamed Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz. During this period, the university experienced a period of rapid growth. New faculties were established, including the faculties of law, medicine, and natural sciences.

The university continued to grow in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Austria.
