Its roots lie in five separate cadre schools that merged in 1958 to form the Shanxi Finance and Economics Institute (SXFEI). In 1984, the Shanxi Economic Management Institute (SXEMI) was established, expanding the scope of economic and management expertise offered. Initially under the joint administration of the Shanxi provincial government and the Ministry of Education, the university transitioned to primarily provincial control in 2000.
