Wuhan University

Wuhan University is a public research university in Wuhan, Hubei, China. It is affiliated with and sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China. The university is part of Project 985, Project 211, and the Double First Class University Plan.
The history of Wuhan University can be traced back to 1893, when it was founded as Ziqiang Institute by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces in the late Qing Dynasty. The institute was established to train students in Western learning and technology in order to modernize China.
In 1928, the National Government in Nanjing formed National Wuhan University (國立武漢大學) on the basis of the original National Wuchang Sun Yat-Sen University, consisting of four colleges: Arts, Law, Science, and Engineering (文、法、理、工). In February 1929, the jurist Wang Shijie became the first president of Wuhan University.
During the Second World War, Wuhan University was relocated to Sichuan Province to avoid the Japanese invasion. After the war, the university returned to its original campus in Wuhan.
In 1949, after the Chinese Communist Revolution, Wuhan University was renamed Wuhan University. The university continued to develop and grow during the People's Republic of China. In 1960, it was accredited as a State key comprehensive university.
In 2001, Wuhan University was granted the privilege of one of the State's priority development universities, a policy known as "the 985 Project." Wuhan University holds the people's satisfaction as its central mission.
Wuhan University is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Global University League (GUL). It has partnerships with many top universities around the world, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Harvard University.
