University of the Valley

University of the Fraser Valley stands as a major public university which extends over the beautiful Fraser Valley region of British Columbia in Canada approximately one hour eastward from downtown Vancouver. The university maintains multiple operational campuses and centers throughout the area because it prioritizes community-based learning methods. The institution’s history is a testament to grassroots determination, originating from an intense community campaign in the 1960s and 70s for local access to higher education. The establishment of Fraser Valley College in 1974 followed after a public vote demonstrated strong support for the regional college which a provincial task force had confirmed as necessary. The college functioned during its initial period as a "college without walls" because it conducted classes in various community locations which included church basements and community centers throughout the valley. The institution's growth matched the region's development because the school obtained university college status in 1991 which enabled degree programs and then achieved full university status in 2008.
