University of Split

University of Split functions as a major research university located in the old coastal town of Split in Croatia. The university operates as the second-biggest educational hub in Croatia while providing essential intellectual and artistic resources to the Dalmatian region and the entire Mediterranean area. The university presents "Mediterranean orientation" as its main academic direction which uses Adriatic coastal natural resources and historical elements and social aspects to shape its educational programs. The university uses its motto Upoznaj, Nauči, Istraži, Studiraj (Meet, Learn, Explore, Study) to create a research community that operates in one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

The official formation of the university took place on June 15, 1974, when it became an independent institution that existed to provide higher education opportunities for the southern Croatian region. The modern university system operates as a new institution but its history traces back to ancient academic practices which existed earlier in the city through church schools that began educating students in 1593. The "Croatian Spring" movement which occurred during the 1970s saw local innovators create educational system reforms that established new educational institutions through their work at various University of Zagreb departments. The university developed into a complete educational system with 11 faculties and an Academy of Arts after it started as a small group of faculties during the past five decades.
