Charles University in Prague

Charles University in Prague is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic, and one of the oldest universities in Europe in continuous operation.

Charles University in Prague was founded in 1348 by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. It was the first university in Central Europe, and was modeled on the universities of Bologna and Paris.

The university quickly gained an international reputation for its academic excellence. In the 15th century, it was a center of the Hussite movement, a religious reform movement that challenged the authority of the Catholic Church.

During the 17th century, the university was controlled by the Jesuits, but it remained a center of learning. In the 18th century, it became a state institution, and began to offer courses in science and medicine.

In the 19th century, the university played a leading role in the Czech National Revival. It was a center of Czech culture and language, and helped to promote Czech nationalism.

During the 20th century, the university was closed by the Nazis during World War II, and by the communists during the Cold War. However, it reopened after each closure, and continued to be a leading center of education and research.

Today, Charles University is a modern, research-intensive university with a global reputation. It is one of the most prestigious universities in Central Europe, and attracts students from all over the world.
