Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University

The Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, or UNPHU) is a private university located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The history of Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) dates back to 1966, when a group of Dominican intellectuals, led by Dr. José Rafael Molina Ureña, founded the Dominican University Foundation (Fundación Universitaria Dominicana, Inc.). The foundation was created with the goal of establishing a private university that would offer a high-quality education to Dominican students, free from the political and ideological influences that were prevalent in the public university system at the time.

The foundation received support from a variety of sources, including the Roman Catholic Church, prominent business leaders, and the Dominican and U.S. governments. In 1966, the foundation was granted authorization to operate a university by the Dominican government, and UNPHU officially opened its doors to students in September of that year.

UNPHU was named after Pedro Henríquez Ureña, a renowned Dominican philosopher, humanist, and educator.
