Central University of Ecuador, Quito

The Central University of Ecuador (Spanish: Universidad Central del Ecuador, UCE) is a national university located in Quito, Ecuador. It is the oldest and largest university in the country, and one of the oldest universities in the Americas.
The Central University of Ecuador (UCE) was founded on October 18, 1620, by royal decree of King Philip IV of Spain. It was originally named the Real Universidad de San Fulgencio, after the patron saint of Quito. The university's first classes were held in a small building in the city center, and it initially offered only a limited number of programs in theology, law, and medicine.
In the early 18th century, the UCE began to expand its offerings, and new programs were added in philosophy, mathematics, and the arts. The university also began to attract students from all over the Spanish Empire, and it soon became one of the most prestigious universities in South America.
In the 19th century, the UCE played a leading role in the Ecuadorian independence movement. Many of the country's founding fathers were graduates of the university, and the UCE's campus was a center of revolutionary activity.
After independence, the UCE continued to grow and develop. New programs were added in engineering, agriculture, and the sciences. The university also began to conduct research, and its faculty and students made significant contributions to the development of Ecuador.
In the 20th century, the UCE experienced a period of rapid growth.
