Bahir Dar University is a public university in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.
Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute (BIT) was established in 1963 under a technical cooperation agreement between the Ethiopian government and the Soviet Union. Its initial focus was on training skilled technicians in fields like agro-mechanics, industrial chemistry, and textiles. Bahir Dar Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAAT) was founded in 1972 through a tripartite agreement between the Ethiopian government, UNESCO, and UNDP. Its mission was to train agricultural professionals and conduct research on improving agricultural productivity in Ethiopia.
Bahir Dar University was officially inaugurated on May 6, 2000. Since then, it has grown rapidly into one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Ethiopia. Bahir Dar University has come a long way since its humble beginnings as two small institutes. Today, it stands as a leading educational and research institution in Ethiopia, playing a pivotal role in the country's development.
