Freiberg University of Technology

Freiberg University of Technology stands as the world’s oldest university dedicated to mining and metallurgy which exists in the historical city of Freiberg in Saxony. The university operates as a dedicated "Resource University" because its programs focus on researching and extracting and managing natural resources in sustainable ways. The university campus displays a unique design because it combines elements from the town’s medieval architecture with its historical mining area through its administration buildings and current research facilities that include an operational underground mine used for educational purposes and scientific research.

The institution established on November 21, 1765 during the Age of Enlightenment originated through the efforts of Prince Francis Xavier of Saxony who based his founding plans on the designs created by Friedrich Wilhelm von Oppel and Friedrich Anton von Heynitz. The creation of this institution served as a strategic response to the economic devastation which followed the Seven Years War because it aimed to create scientific education programs that would restore Saxony's mining sector. The university developed into a worldwide center for research throughout its history because researchers discovered two chemical elements germanium and indium at this institution. The institution received its official status as a Technical University in 1993 after Germany reunited because its academic programs had expanded beyond traditional mining education.
