University of Erlangen Nuremberg

University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, is a distinguished public research university located in the Bavarian cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg. The university serves as the second largest educational institution in Bavaria which functions as a crucial driver of technological progress for the European Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg which ranks among Germanys most active business districts. The university uses its motto "Knowledge in Motion" to define its identity which demonstrates its dedication to both interdisciplinary research partnerships and effective research translation into practical industrial and societal uses. The campus design showcases its distinctiveness through its combination of Erlangens historical Schloss (Palace) and Baroque garden buildings with Nurembergs contemporary urban spaces and advanced research facilities in nearby Fürth.

The institution’s history began in 1742 when it was first established in Bayreuth by Margrave Frederick of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, before being relocated to Erlangen in 1743. The institution received its new name Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in 1769 to honor Margrave Christian Frederick Charles Alexander who became its second major benefactor. The university evolved during the 19th century to become a state-run institution after its initial operation as a small princely academy. The Nuremberg Commercial College for Business and Social Science joined the university in 1961 which created a unified academic institution that connected both cities through its educational programs. The university maintained its function as an educational institution throughout the 20th century despite facing various obstacles because Erlangen remained one of the few German university towns which avoided major destruction during World War II enabling the quick revival of its educational programs.
