University of Göttingen

University of Göttingen, which has the official name Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, operates as a prominent public research institution from its location in the ancient city of Göttingen, which is situated in Lower Saxony of Germany. The university, which was established during the Enlightenment period, operates under the name "Georgia Augusta" because it represents the oldest educational institution in the state. The organization operates as a research institution because it provides academic personnel with unrestricted research opportunities while maintaining connections to multiple research institutions that include Max Planck Institutes. The university campus features a combination of historical half-timbered buildings and contemporary structures which establish a "city of science" environment that connects university activities with municipal life.

King George II of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover founded the university in 1734. The university conducted its first official ceremonies three years later in 1737. The institution developed into a worldwide educational center because of its ability to develop critical thinking skills during the 18th and 19th centuries when it became the home base of the "Göttingen School of History" and developed into an international mathematics and physics center. The university reached a critical point in its history when a group of seven professors known as the "Göttingen Seven" which included the Brothers Grimm were dismissed because they protested against the Hanoverian constitution. The university became the first educational institution in Germany to restart classes after World War II because its academic community suffered severe losses during the Nazi period. The university returned to its position as an international center for scientific research after it reopened in 1945.
