Padjadjaran University

Padjadjaran University is one of the state universities in Indonesia located in Bandung, West Java.

The history of Padjadjaran University (Unpad) can be traced back to 1954, when the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was the only engineering institute in the state. Community leaders in West Java were eager to improve higher education opportunities in the region, so they began to plan for the establishment of a new university.

On September 11, 1957, Unpad was officially opened by the President of Indonesia, Sukarno. The university was named after the Sunda Kingdom city of Pakuan Pajajaran, which was once located in the area that is now Bandung.

At the time of its establishment, Unpad consisted of four faculties: Law and Civic Knowledge, Economics, Teacher Training and Education (Guidance and Counseling, an incarnation of PTPG in Bandung), and Medicine. In the years that followed, Unpad expanded rapidly, adding new faculties and programs of study.

In 1977, Unpad began to develop a new campus in Jatinangor, about 30 kilometers from Bandung. The Jatinangor campus was officially opened in 1983, and Unpad began to gradually move its educational activities to the new campus. Today, the Jatinangor campus is Unpad's main campus, and it is home to most of the university's faculties and programs of study.

Over the years, Unpad has become one of the leading universities in Indonesia. It is consistently ranked among the top universities in the country by both domestic and international rankings. Unpad is also known for its strong research and innovation capabilities. The university has produced many notable alumni in a variety of fields, including politics, government, business, and academia.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, Padjadjaran University is positioned as the #596 top university in the world, which makes it the #7 top university in Indonesia.
