Amirkabir University of Technology

Amirkabir University of Technology, also known as Tehran Polytechnic, is a public technological university located in Tehran, Iran.

Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT) was founded in 1928 as a technical academy by the Iranian government. The academy was initially established to train Iranian students in engineering and other technical fields, in order to reduce Iran's reliance on foreign expertise.

In 1956, the academy was transformed into a full-fledged university by Habib Nafisi, a prominent Iranian engineer and educator. Nafisi expanded the university's curriculum and faculty, and also established new research centers and laboratories.

During the Pahlavi dynasty, AUT was further expanded and enlarged by Dr. Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi, who served as the university's president from 1963 to 1979. Under Mojtahedi's leadership, AUT became one of the leading universities in Iran in engineering, science, and technology.

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, AUT was renamed Amirkabir University of Technology in memory of Amirkabir Farahani, an outstanding figure in Iran's contemporary history who had resolved to expand and develop the pillars of technology and industry in Iran.

Despite the challenges of the revolution and the Iran-Iraq War, AUT continued to grow and develop its academic and research programs. In recent years, AUT has become a leading center for research in engineering, science, and technology in the Middle East.

Today, AUT is one of the most prestigious universities in Iran. It is a highly selective university with a strong reputation for academic excellence. AUT is a vital part of Iran's scientific and technological infrastructure. Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, Amirkabir University of Technology is positioned as the #403 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Iran. The university's global rank decreased by 28 points from last year.
