Tel Aviv University

Israel's largest educational institution exists as a public research institution called Tel Aviv University. The university operates from its Ramat Aviv campus which serves as an essential educational and cultural center throughout Israel's most densely populated urban region. The 220-acre campus offers visitors a unique experience of an outdoor museum which showcases various architectural styles through its Brutalist concrete buildings and modern environmentally friendly "green" structures. The institution maintains a worldwide focus which results in its permanent status as a leading university that ranks among the top institutions worldwide for research and innovation and its ability to create successful startup entrepreneurs.

The establishment of the State of Israel marked the beginning of the university's development which continued until its current state. The university established its official identity in 1956 through a merger that combined three research entities: the Tel Aviv School of Law and Economics and the Institute of Natural Sciences and the Institute of Jewish Studies. The Taraf Institute operated under Tel Aviv municipal control until 1963 when it became an independent institution with its own Ramat Aviv campus which opened that same year. The university developed into an academic research institution during the following decades when Tel Aviv transformed into an international technology and business hub.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Tel Aviv University is positioned as the #223 top university in the world, which makes it the #1 top university in Israel. The university's global rank decreased by 14 points from last year.
