University of Florence

University of Florence stands as a prestigious research institution which operates as a public university in Florence, Italy and functions as one of the largest and most prominent educational institutions throughout the nation. The institution maintains a strong connection with the Tuscan capital because its departments and schools operate from both historical downtown locations and contemporary research facilities that include the Sesto Fiorentino campus. The institution serves as an active member of EUniWell alliance and European University Association to support international research initiatives and sustainable development efforts. The institution uses an emblem that displays King Solomon as its visual identity because this emblem has represented its wisdom and authority since almost one hundred years.

The university’s origins trace back to the Studium Generale, established by the Florentine Republic in 1321, making it one of the oldest academic institutions in the world. The institution achieved academic recognition during the 14th century when Pope Clement VI issued a Papal Bull which recognized its degrees to create the first Italian Faculty of Theology. The institution experienced multiple unstable periods which included its move to Pisa during the 1472 period when Lorenzo the Magnificent ruled. The various separated institutes of higher education came together to create the modern university system which received the official title of "University" through royal decree in 1924, after the Grand Duchy of Tuscany ended in 1859.
