Hiroshima University

Hiroshima University serves as a prominent national research university in Japan which maintains its primary campus in Higashi-Hiroshima and operates multiple campuses throughout Hiroshima City. The university operates as a multidisciplinary institution which provides various academic programs while its unique educational approach focuses on peace studies and international collaboration. The university functions as a central research center for Western Japan which supports academic progress through its research environment that promotes scientific research and academic development in natural sciences and humanities and social sciences.

The institution’s history is deeply intertwined with the recovery and resilience of its host city. The National School Establishment Law of 1949 enabled the institution to establish itself as a university through the unification of eight educational organizations which included the Hiroshima University of Literature and Science and the Hiroshima Higher Normal School whose history began in 1874. The atomic bombing on August 6 1945 caused severe destruction to many of the former educational institutions which had existed before that date. Academic personnel rebuilt the bombed facilities to enable the university to achieve its official charter status which included its founding principle as a unified institution committed to peace activities. The university moved its entire operations to the new extensive Higashi-Hiroshima campus after it developed its research facilities throughout the subsequent three decades.
