Osaka University (大阪大学), or Handai (阪大) is Japan’s sixth-oldest university. In 1869, Osaka Prefectural Medical School was founded, later becoming Osaka Prefectural Medical College. This merged with the College of Science, and formed Osaka Imperial University. With the inclusion of Osaka Technical College, Osaka University was formed in 1947.
Following the Second World War, Osaka University consisted of the faculties of engineering, science, medicine, law and letters. Subsequently, research institutes and graduate schools were established, with an emphasis on cross-discipline research.
