Osaka University

Osaka University (大阪大学), or Handai (阪大) is Japan's sixth-oldest university. In 1869, Osaka Prefectural Medical School was founded, later becoming Osaka Prefectural Medical College. This merged with the College of Science and formed Osaka Imperial University. With the inclusion of Osaka Technical College, Osaka University was formed in 1947.

Following the Second World War, Osaka University consisted of the faculties of engineering, science, medicine, law, and letters. Subsequently, research institutes and graduate schools were established, with an emphasis on cross-discipline research.

Based on the QS World University Ranking of 2023, Osaka University is positioned as the #68 top university in the world, which makes it the #4 top university in Japan. The university's global rank is improved by 7 points from last year.
