Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech)

Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) is commonly called, is a prestigious national research university located in the larger metropolitan area of Tokyo, Japan. The school operates three major campuses which include both Ookayama and Suzukakedai and Tamachi. The university is known for its "Monotsukuri" spirit which represents a Japanese philosophy that combines technical expertise with innovative development. The university creates an active learning space which enables students to become global leaders who solve difficult international challenges through their scientific abilities and their ability to create useful solutions. The Japanese government established the school in 1881 when it started operations as the Tokyo Vocational School. 

The school established its current main campus at Ookayama in 1924 after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 destroyed its original Kuramae campus. The university received degree-granting status in 1929 and changed its name to Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1946. The organization transformed itself through national educational changes which led to its partial privatization in 2004. The university completed its historic merger with Tokyo Medical and Dental University on October 1 2024 to establish the Institute of Science Tokyo which continues its heritage as a new institution.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) is positioned as the #85 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Japan.
