Lebanese University

Lebanese University functions as Lebanon's only public higher education institution which provides essential support for the country's cultural and scientific development. The university operates from its Beirut headquarters and main campus in Hadath while running multiple faculties and institutes across different governorates to deliver its educational programs to all community members. A group of students and teachers started a strong grassroots movement for educational reform which led to the founding of the university in 1951 to establish a national educational institution that would compete with existing private schools. The government created the first university departments which taught teacher training and statistical studies after citizens staged protests and labor strikes. The institution experienced rapid growth during the middle of the 20th century until the Lebanese Civil War started in 1975 which forced the school to create regional branches so that education could continue during the country's civil unrest. The university developed into a national educational system which enabled it to serve as a national unifying force throughout the conflict and the post-war period.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Lebanese University is positioned as the #515 top university in the world, which makes it the #2 top university in Lebanon. The university's global rank is improved by 52 points from last year.
