The merger was part of a government initiative to create a single, world-class university in Luxembourg. The University of Luxembourg is a major research institution. The university has a strong focus on interdisciplinary research, and it is home to a number of research centers, including the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust.
