Sunway University

Sunway University is a top-ranked not-for-profit private institution located in the vibrant city of Sunway, Malaysia. It was established as a beacon of high-quality education in the Southeast Asia region and is part of Sunway Education Group and owned by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. The university features a modern, sustainable campus that has been designed in keeping with the 15-minute city concept and includes a unique canopy walk that connects its academic buildings to various residential and social hubs. Although it is relatively young when compared to its global counterparts, the university has quickly made its way up the international rankings and has now reached a position of being among the top 2% of universities worldwide.

The university was founded in 1987 when Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah opened Sunway College with a vision to provide Malaysians access to quality world-class education via innovative twinning and credit transfer programmes. In 2004 the institution was upgraded to "Sunway University College," and in 2011 it got its status as a full university. The most important point in the university's history occurred in 2010 when it was gifted by its founder, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, to the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation for a transition to a social enterprise model, meaning that all surpluses generated from operating will be reinvested in scholarships and research. The long-standing commitment to philanthropy has allowed the university to develop strong and competitive partnerships with many well-regarded institutions.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Sunway University is positioned as the #410 top university in the world, which makes it the #9 top university in Malaysia. The university's global rank is improved by 129 points from last year.
