University of Malaysia, Pahang serves as a top technical public university in Pahang, which represents the largest state of Peninsular Malaysia. The university functions as a research center for innovation in the East Coast Industrial Belt while being recognized as one of the top educational institutions in the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN). The university maintains two primary campuses which include its permanent campus in Pekan and its secondary campus in Gambang that provides a "teaching factory" learning space. The Malaysian government established the university on February 16, 2002 by founding it as Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUKTEM). The institution began operations at its first temporary campus which had been an industrial site in Gambang to produce highly skilled technical professionals needed by the country. The institution achieved university status on February 1 2007 when it changed its name to Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The university completed a major rebranding process in April 2023 which resulted in its current name Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah to honor the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the current Sultan of Pahang who serves as the university's Chancellor.
