Eduardo Mondlane University

Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is the oldest and largest public university in Mozambique. It is a comprehensive and multidisciplinary institution based on training, research, and extension services. The university is located in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) boasts a rich and dynamic history, mirroring Mozambique's journey towards independence and nation-building. Founded in 1962 as the Mozambique University of General Studies (Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique), the institution emerged amidst the fervent struggle for Mozambican independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

The university's establishment marked a significant milestone in Mozambique's educational landscape, providing access to higher education for the country's burgeoning intellectual community.

In 1968, the university underwent a name change to Universidade de Lourenço Marques, reflecting the capital city's designation at the time. Following Mozambique's independence in 1975, the university was renamed Eduardo Mondlane University in honor of the assassinated leader of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO), Eduardo Mondlane. Mondlane, a visionary intellectual and anthropologist, had played a crucial role in uniting Mozambique's diverse ethnic groups and spearheading the struggle for independence.
