University of Canterbury

The public research institution University of Canterbury, which Māori speakers call Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha, operates from its campus in Christchurch New Zealand. The university which serves as the second oldest institution in New Zealand has built a worldwide reputation for academic excellence which places it among the top universities of the world. The university maintains its campus in Ilam because it contains large landscaped areas which create a dynamic environment that fosters learning and social interaction. The South Island research and innovation center operates as a main research facility which develops research partnerships with local organizations and international research projects while it nurtures research curiosity.

The institution English name shows its establishment as Canterbury College in 1873 when it became the first college of the University of New Zealand. The university system operated according to traditional English "Oxbridge" rules but became unique because it started to accept both male and female students from its first day. The university spent more than 100 years working from its neo-Gothic stone buildings which used to be located in Christchurch center until the institution moved to Ilam in the 1960s and 70s. The university has hosted many famous scholars throughout its existence which includes Nobel Prize winner Ernest Rutherford and philosopher Karl Popper and the school recently marked its 150th anniversary which took place in 2023.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, University of Canterbury is positioned as the #261 top university in the world, which makes it the #5 top university in New Zealand. The university's current global rank is the same as last year.
