University of Stavanger

The University of Stavanger (UiS) is a public university located in Stavanger, Norway.

The University of Stavanger (UiS) has a relatively short history, but its roots can be traced back to the early 1900s. In 1916, the Stavanger Teachers College was founded, followed by the Stavanger Nursing School in 1920 and the Stavanger Social Work College in 1950. In the 1960s and 1970s, several other colleges were established in Stavanger, including the Rogaland Conservatory of Music, the Norwegian Hospitality College, and the Rogaland College Center.

In 1994, the Stavanger University College (Høgskolen i Stavanger; HiS) was founded by merging the Rogaland College Center with the Stavanger Teachers College, Stavanger College of Nursing, Stavanger Social Work College, Norwegian Hospitality College, Rogaland Conservatory of Music, and Congregational College. HiS quickly became one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Norway.

In 2005, the Norwegian government granted HiS university status, renaming it the University of Stavanger. UiS has since continued to grow and develop, and is now the largest university in Western Norway.

The university has provided a highly skilled workforce for the local industry, and its research has contributed to the development of new technologies and businesses.
