Birzeit University

Birzeit University is a public university in the West Bank, in the State of Palestine, registered by the Palestinian Ministry of Social Affairs as a charitable organization.

Birzeit University was founded in 1924 as a school for girls by Nabiha Nasir, a member of a pioneering family of Palestinian educators. The school was initially located in a rented house in Birzeit, but it quickly grew and moved to a new building in 1929.

In 1953, Birzeit School began offering first-year university courses in arts and sciences, in addition to its high school program. The university was formally established in 1975, and it has since grown to become one of the leading institutions of higher education in Palestine.

Birzeit University has always been committed to academic excellence and social justice. The university has been a center of Palestinian nationalism and resistance to Israeli occupation. In the early 1980s, the university was closed by the Israeli military for four years. However, it reopened in 1986 and has continued to thrive despite the challenges of occupation.

In recent years, Birzeit University has also emerged as a leader in research and innovation. The university has established several research centers and institutes, and its faculty members have published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals.

Birzeit University is accredited by the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and the Association of Arab Universities. The university is also a member of the International Association of Universities and the International Federation of Catholic Universities.

Birzeit University is ranked as the #3 top university in Palestine during 2024. This is the same rank as last year.
