Ateneo de Manila University, or simply Ateneo de Manila, is a private Catholic university.
Ateneo de Manila University's history dates back to 1590, when the Jesuits established one of the Philippines' first colleges, the Colegio de Manila (otherwise known as the Colegio Seminario de San Ignacio). The school opened its doors in 1595 and taught various courses, including Latin, grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy. In 1859, the Jesuits began the Escuela Municipal de Manila, a public primary school in Intramuros. The school later changed its name to Ateneo Municipal de Manila and became a private school in 1912. In 1952, Ateneo transferred to its current campus in Loyola Heights, Quezon City. The Ateneo is well recognized for its commitment to social justice and service to the community. The university has various programs and projects aimed at addressing social issues and improving Filipinos' lives.
