Politehnica University of Bucharest (Romanian: Universitatea Politehnica din București) is a technical university in Bucharest, Romania.
The history of Politehnica University of Bucharest can be traced back to 1818, when Gheorghe Lazăr, a Romanian scholar and revolutionary, founded the first higher technical school in Wallachia at the Saint Sava Abbey in Bucharest. In 1832, the school was reorganized into the St. Sava College.
On October 1, 1864, the School of Bridges and Roads, Mines and Architecture was established. This school was the forerunner of Politehnica University of Bucharest. In 1867, the school was renamed the School of Bridges, Roads and Mines.
In 1881, under the leadership of Gheorghe Duca, the institution was reorganized into the National School of Bridges and Roads. On June 10, 1920, the Politehnica School of Bucharest was founded, with four departments: Electromechanics, Civil Engineering, Mines and Metallurgy, and Industrial Section. The name of the school was changed to POLITEHNICA of Bucharest in November 1920.
In 1948, the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest was founded. This institute initially included four faculties, and most of the current faculties were established in the 1950s. In November 1992, the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest was renamed University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest.
Politehnica University of Bucharest has played a major role in the development of engineering and technology in Romania. The university has produced many notable alumni, including Nicolae Teclu, the inventor of the modern dam; Gheorghe Constantinescu, the inventor of the first jet engine; and Henri Coandă, the inventor of the Coandă effect.
