University of the West

Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara (UVT) is a public research university located in Timișoara, Romania.

The history of the University of the West in Timișoara, Romania (UVT) can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when the first two faculties of higher education were established in the city: the Faculty of Philosophy in 1841 and the Faculty of Law in 1845.

In 1956, the Faculty of Philology was established, and in 1959, the Pedagogical Institute of Timișoara was founded with six faculties: Mathematics, Physics-Chemistry, Philology, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, History and Geography, Fine Arts, and Physical Education.

In 1962, the Pedagogical Institute of Timișoara was merged with the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy of Timișoara to form the University of Timișoara. The university was initially organized into three faculties: Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

In the following years, the university expanded rapidly, adding new faculties and departments. In 1970, there were 12 faculties with 20 specializations. However, the development of the university was restricted during the communist era by the strict control of the Romanian government over education and professional training.

After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the University of Timișoara was granted autonomy and began to expand its academic offerings and international partnerships. In 1991, the university was renamed the University of the West (UVT).
