Université Gaston Berger (UGB) is a public university in Saint-Louis, Senegal.
The Université Gaston Berger (UGB) was founded in 1974 as the University of Saint-Louis. The first stone for the university was laid by Senegalese President Léopold Sédar Senghor on January 14, 1975. The university was officially established by law no. 90-03 of January 2, 1990, and welcomed its first class of 600 students on December 17, 1990.
The university was renamed for Gaston Berger, a French-Senegalese philosopher, on December 4, 1996. Berger was born in Saint-Louis and was the father of Maurice Béjart, a renowned choreographer.
The university is located in the city of Saint-Louis, which is the former capital of Senegal. The campus is situated on the banks of the Senegal River and is surrounded by rice paddies and mango orchards.
The university is a member of the Association of African Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Agence Universitaire Francophone.
UGB has made a significant contribution to the development of Senegal and the West African region. The university has produced many graduates who have gone on to become leaders in their fields. UGB has also played a role in promoting regional integration and cooperation.
