Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology
Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology is a highly regarded national research institution located within Daegu Technopolis, South Korea. As one of four public institutions with a focus on the advancement of science and engineering in South Korea, DGIST receives direct financial support from the South Korean Government. The DGIST campus has been designed to serve as a research hub for “convergence” science where natural sciences and engineering disciplines interact and collaborate, providing usable research results for industry and academia. DGIST has world-class research infrastructure and high technology facilities and represents an important foundation for innovation in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region, while also making a significant contribution to the global scientific position of South Korea.
DGIST began its journey in 2004 as a research institution established by the South Korean Government as part of an effort to revitalize the local economy and increase South Korea’s competitiveness in the field of science and technology. Following a legislative amendment passed in 2008, DGIST was allowed to expand its mission to include education. In 2011, DGIST established a graduate school; followed by the establishment of an undergraduate school in 2014. The transition from a pure research centre to a research-oriented university has been shaped by a commitment to the “single-department” system for undergraduate students — an innovative system designed to disrupt the traditional model of education as having separate undergraduate programs associated with multiple disciplines.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology is positioned as the #370 top university in the world, which makes it the #9 top university in South Korea.
